Organic Blackstrap Molasses 740g
Our Organic Blackstrap Molasses is produced in South America and is a natural by-product of sugar cane refining. It’s extracted using a traditional process whereby the beneficial nutrients are concentrated into the molasses. This is a natural, unsulphered product and the consistency may vary.
Several types of molasses are available, depending upon the stage from which they are extracted. The most nutritionally important is the “third extraction” or Blackstrap, which is the final residue from the whole process – and therefore the lowest in sugar and the highest in concentrated minerals. The name ‘blackstrap’ originates from the black ‘strap’ or mark that distinguished the casks of molasses from the casks of raw sugar that were shipped along with it.
Blackstrap molasses has a very low GI index, which is a measurement carried out on carbohydrate containing foods and the impact that they have on blood sugar. Low GI diets have links to decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, and many health benefits, which means that you can still get your sugar fix from our Blackstrap Molasses without impacting your health. It has a very high iron content which is essential for creating red blood cells and is a rich source of magnesium and calcium which work well together in terms of bone production and energy.
It’s also received a lot of media attention recently for its possible positive impact upon hair. There are two reasons why blackstrap molasses is so good for our hair. Firstly, many of the minerals found in it, such as selenium, manganese and zinc are antioxidants which, due to their free radical-scavenging abilities, are well-known for their anti-aging benefits. In fact, one of the most immediately noticeable benefits of regular blackstrap consumption is softer and smoother skin and hair.
Secondly, 1 tablespoon of blackstrap contains 20 percent of our recommended daily allowance of the essential trace mineral copper. Though copper is toxic in high quantities, it does perform several important functions in the body when consumed in moderation -- including helping the body to produce melanin, the pigment responsible for hair colour. This copper content is the reason why so many people, including the elderly, find that their hair returns to its original colour after long-term blackstrap consumption. Some men have even found that blackstrap molasses may stimulate hair regrowth!
Perfect for use in baking, as a marinade in savoury dishes or simply consume a tablespoon a day either neat or dissolved in water as an addition to your diet.
